We're sorry, and we promise we're at least as bummed as you are.

We loved smoking fish for our community. We did it well, we took real pride in the quality we achieved, and we loved hearing from customers just how much they enjoyed it.

A big part of what made it so good was the famed and adored Big Glory Bay (King) Salmon from Stewart Island. But demand for that salmon, both here and overseas, pushed prices up 40% last year, and that alone made our operation unsustainable.

We didn't give up easily. We spent months trialling other farmed King Salmon, and even gave Atlantic Salmon a go, adjusting our process each time to get the best possible result. We finally found another South Island farmed King Salmon we thought we could work with, only to discover the farm stops producing over the hot summer months.

Trying to get established without the buying power to secure discounted bulk rates pushed the whole thing firmly into the "too hard basket." Maybe we'll return to smoking salmon if raw costs come down enough that we're not selling a very premium product into a struggling economy.

For now, we've turned our attention to other community-first projects, including the Waterview Food Trucks on Saturdays and the monthly Waterview Saturday Market.
